One and a half months before the launch of the next global climate conference, COP 28 in Dubai, Pope Francis has published the long-awaited successor to "climate cycle" Laudato Si. In this he calls for rapid and far-reaching climate policy.
On the anniversary of his namesake St. Francis of Assisi, the Pope notes that since 2015 the appearance of Laudato Sieb and the conclusion of the Paris climate agreement have not been sufficiently achieved. The climate is changing ever faster, biodiversity is disappearing and the poorest in the world suffers most from these processes. This is reproachable, irresponsible and shortsighted, the Pope thinks: 'What is the point of preservation a power that will be remembered for its inabacity toIntervene?" (Laudate Deum, §60).
It calls for the rapid and drastic reduction of the use of fossil fuels, binding and verifiable agreements on energy transition, solidarity among nations and individuals and a profound personal change in our vision of life and consumption culture. He says: "every little bit helps, and avoiding an increase of a tent of a degree in the global temperature would already suffer to allviate some swelling for many people. Yet what is important is something less quantitative: the need to realize that there are no tax changes without cultural changes, without a mature of lifestyles and benefits within societies, and there are no cultural changes without personal changes(Laudate Deum, §70).
Socires is convinced that this thinking is relevant to everyone. Since 2021 developed Socires Therefore, within the programme Laudato Si hindered/Integral Ecology various initiatives to introduce people in the Netherlands to Integral Ecology. The ecological crisis is also a social and personal crisis, linked to our way of producing, consuming, living together and thinking about ourselves and the world. Laudate Deum supports the need for rapid and structural change in our way of life and our relationship to each other.
