About this Cahier
On September 10, 2025, Charlie Kirk was shot in a debate with students on the Utah Valley University campus. He was 31 years old. In the years before he had built an empire with Turning Point USA with which he mobilized young America. He was Trump's sign to that generation, and in many ways more MAGA than Trump himself. A year after his death, the question of what this phenomenon has to say to us is still not answered.
This first edition of the Socires- Cahier. Looking at his ideas, his character and his time, and opening with Kirk's own essay, for the first time translated into Dutch. Two months before his death, he prescribed The Spectator About his visit to Oxford and Cambridge. He concluded: The revolution crosses the ocean, and the students of the elite universities will be the last to know.
Kirk wanted to make the United States a Protestant-Christian nation again, returning to his own earlier support for the separation of church and state. He emphasised family, family and community: less government, less individualism, more society. As I-politician, focused on stage and camera, he's in line with Pim Fortuyn: died at the height of his popularity, and therefore an unsold promise. And he was a child of social media: churches are empty, while the algorithm takes over the pulpit. God is not gone, he has moved.
This Cahier contains essays by Cees Zweistra, Marianne Thieme, Carmody Grey, Anton de Wit, Ward Huetink, Annemiek Schilpzand and Jelle van Baardewijk. Did Kirk's myth after his death become the lifeguard of his movement, or was he just a passerby? Kirk believed secular progressive liberalism has failed. Are we taking that seriously enough? Is he the vanguard of what is to come, including in Europe and the Netherlands?
