Since the late 1960s, the number of Dutch believers in God has fallen sharply. According to the Social and Cultural Planning Bureau, a majority claim to be agnostic or atheist. However, this does not mean that small and large life questions have become irrelevant. Libraries play a surprising role in conducting conversations about those questions.
In his article Fancy a library Ronald van Cities shows how libraries play a surprising and increasingly important role in the conversation about meaning. While fewer and fewer Dutch feel connected to religious institutions, the need for reflection, attention and a good conversation remains high. Libraries appear to be ideal places where people walk in and feel heard. From listening groups to coffee afternoons and from individual conversations to moments of encounter: Everywhere there is room for personal stories, comfort and connection.
The article describes how these neutral and accessible public spaces contribute to well-being, relaxation and the feeling of belonging to something - a valuable counterweight in a society that is increasingly under pressure.
