Society on a geopolitical drift

The geopolitical shifts in the world order are among the most profound trends of our generation. Although there has been talk of the “return of geopolitics” for years, the Netherlands lacks a coherent narrative about our position in the world. The Netherlands and Europe cannot afford to adopt a wait-and-see attitude now that the global economy and the international legal order are being actively reformed by actors who pay little heed to Dutch interests. This has far-reaching consequences for our position in the world, not only in terms of (economic) competitiveness or physical and hybrid security, but also in terms of our ability to realise our values. Yet so far, we seem to be mainly reacting to developments rather than formulating our own vision and future.

With the program Society on a geopolitical drift , Socires focuses not only on the hard geopolitical aspects of security and prosperity, but also on the broader impact on values and society. Geopolitical issues are too complex and far-reaching to be left solely to politics and government, particularly as developments permeate society at large.

What we do
As part of the programme, we are organising a high-level geo-economic strategic consultation. We will be focusing on the question of how the business community, government, science and civil society organisations can strengthen the Netherlands' position in the world within the framework of the top sector policy. Among other things, Dutch knowledge and food production can help us position ourselves in a turbulent world.

Who we work with
This programme is made possible by a donation from the Alpha Omega Fund.
In the programme, we collaborate with, among others, the WRR and the Top Sector Agri & Food.
