Wednesday 1 October was the first evening of the philosophical film series "Kinosofie" in the Church of the Monastery. The kickoff was done with the film "La Bête" (2023) by director Bertrand Bonello. Kees Buitendijk, Director of Socires and author of the book "Thinking about Films," presented an introduction.
The Beast in the Jungle
La Bête is loosely based on the short story The Beast in the Jungle (1903) by British writer Henry James. That story is about a young man living in the deep conviction that something terrible is waiting for him. His whole life is marked by this fear and that prevents him from surrendering to the love of his life. She wants to, but he keeps her at bay.
La Bête
In La Bête, we follow Gabrielle and Louis. Paris, 2044. They are young and in love, but also uncomfortable and afraid to get hurt. Luckily, there's an AI computer who knows what to do with that dilemma. The DNA of Gabrielle and Louis will be purified. Then they're happy, right?

Handover book and reflection
Some 40 visitors came to listen to Kees' introduction and to watch the film together. After the film there was a short reflection and there was room for questions and discussion. The first copy of the bookThinking about FilmIt was awarded to Fulco Timmers, preacher in the Monastery Church.

Next month, The Blue Caftan.
