A democratic society requires trust: together, but also in the government. This trust cannot just be implemented, but grows when people come together. Libraries, community centers, parks are crucial places to meet. With a financial ravine in sight, additional municipal cuts on precisely these public facilities threaten. That's very unwise. Especially in troubled times of social tension, political polarization and international threats, local democracy and social resilience need to be stimulated. It is therefore appropriate to devote part of the "freedom' contribution to this.
Ronald van Steden wrote an article about this that was recently published in Christian Democratic Explorations (CDV).
