Carmody Grey

Carmody Grey is per 1 oktober 2024 benoemd tot bijzonder hoogleraar Integrale Ecologie aan het Laudato Si’-Instituut, binnen de Faculteit der Filosofie, Theologie en Religiewetenschappen van de Radboud Universiteit.

De nieuwe bijzondere leerstoel Integrale Ecologie richt zich op de versterking van de academische en maatschappelijke dialoog over ecologie en sociale rechtvaardigheid, vanuit een perspectief waarin wetenschap, ethiek en levensbeschouwing samenkomen. De benoeming van Carmody Grey geldt voor een periode van vijf jaar.

Nieuwe leerstoel Integrale Ecologie

De ecologische crisis kent vele aspecten en dimensies. Naast (natuur)wetenschappelijke factoren spelen ook ethische, filosofische, levensbeschouwelijke en spirituele dimensies een rol. De bijzondere leerstoel Integrale Ecologie heeft als doel de dialoog over socio-ecologische vraagstukken te verdiepen en te versterken vanuit een integrale benadering, waarbij wetenschappelijke kennis en ethische, filosofische, levensbeschouwelijke en spirituele perspectieven samenkomen. De komende jaren zal Grey zich richten op de verdieping van integrale ecologie vanuit de katholiek-sociale traditie in dialoog met andere levensbeschouwelijke en seculiere wereldbeelden. Hierbij zal ze niet alleen de samenwerking opzoeken binnen universiteiten, maar ook met andere maatschappelijke partners.

Over Carmody Grey

Grey was voorheen assistent-professor Katholieke Theologie aan de Durham University en is daarnaast Adjunct Professor of Ethics aan de Universiteit van Bern. Sinds haar aantreden bij Durham University in 2018 heeft ze een wereldwijde reputatie opgebouwd op het gebied van filosofische theologie en theologische ethiek, met een focus op wetenschap, natuur en milieu. Grey’s monografie Theology, Science and Life werd gepubliceerd in 2023. Ze is in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en wereldwijd een veelgevraagd spreker. Ze heeft meerdere graden in theologie en filosofie (van Trinity College Oxford, King’s College Cambridge, de Universiteit van Bristol en de Universiteit van Nottingham), evenals een postgraduaat in natuurbehoudbiologie (van Edinburgh).

Laudato Si’-Instituut voor Integrale Ecologie

De bijzondere leerstoel Integrale Ecologie is onderdeel van het Laudato Si’-Instituut voor Integrale Ecologie. Naast de eerdere aanstellingen van een wetenschappelijk medewerker en een PhD-student, is de aanstelling van Grey een belangrijke stap in de verdere vormgeving van het Laudato Si’-Instituut en de verdieping van de academische en maatschappelijke dialoog over de socio-ecologische uitdagingen van onze tijd. De encycliek Laudato Si’ (2015) van Paus Franciscus is een belangrijke inspiratiebron voor het Instituut. Het instituut is een samenwerking tussen de Radboud Universiteit en onafhankelijke denktank Socires.

De bijzondere leerstoel Integrale Ecologie is ingesteld door de onafhankelijke denktank Socires en wordt onder meer mogelijk gemaakt door Porticus, Fundatie Charitas Roosendaal, RC Maagdenhuis, Kansfonds en Stichting BKBO.

Carmody Grey has been appointed professor by special appointment of Integral Ecology at the Laudato Si’ Institute, at Radboud University’s Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies.

This newly established chair by special appointment in Integral Ecology aims to strengthen academic and societal dialogue on ecology and social justice from a perspective that integrates science, ethics, and worldviews. The appointment of Carmody Grey is for a period of five years.

Special chair in Integral Ecology

The ecological crisis has many facets and dimensions. In addition to scientific factors, ethical, philosophical, spiritual and religious dimensions play crucial roles. The chair by special appointment in Integral Ecology seeks to deepen and broaden the dialogue on socio-ecological issues through an integral approach that combines scientific knowledge with ethical, philosophical, spiritual and religious perspectives. In the coming years, Grey will focus on advancing Integral Ecology from the tradition of Catholic Social Thought while engaging in dialogue with other worldviews, both religious and secular. She will focus on collaborating not only with academic institutions but also with other societal partners.

About Carmody Grey

Grey was previously assistant professor of Catholic Theology at Durham University and is also Adjunct Professor of Ethics at the University of Bern. Since joining Durham in 2018, she has forged an global reputation in philosophical theology and theological ethics, with a focus on science, nature and environment. Her monograph Theology, Science and Life was published in 2023. She’s in high demand as a speaker and broadcaster in the UK and across the world. Grey holds multiple degrees in theology and philosophy (from Trinity College Oxford, King’s College Cambridge, the University of Bristol and the University of Nottingham) as well as a postgraduate degree in conservation biology (from Edinburgh).

Laudato Si’ Institute

The Special Chair in Integral Ecology is part of the Laudato Si’ Institute for Integral Ecology, a collaborative initiative between Radboud University and Socires, established in December 2023. Following the earlier appointments of a research fellow and a PhD student, the appointment of Grey marks an important step in further shaping the Laudato Si’ Institute and promoting academic and societal dialogue on the socio-ecological challenges of our time. The 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’ by Pope Francis serves as a key inspiration for the Institute.

The Special Chair in Integral Ecology was initiated by the independent think-tank Socires and is established with support from, among others, Porticus, Fundatie Charitas Roosendaal, RC Maagdenhuis, Kansfonds en Stichting BKBO.
