“The duty of directors and supervisors to operate their business as a “responsible corporation” should be legally enforced.” With this statement, 25 Dutch Professors of Law opened the discussion on “corporate purpose”, in June of this year (2020). Jaap Winter, chairman of the Advisory Council of the Finance and the Common Good program, is one of the prominent members of this group of professors. Now – in September 2020 – the Dutch newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad (FD) reports on the discussions that have arisen within various boards in reaction to the Professors’ proposal. The headline reads: “Corporate elite rejects legal enforcements of corporate responsibility”.
